Projeto Baleia Jubarte - The Humpback Whale Project
In Praia do Forte they are creating tourism while protecting marine wildlife! Being a guest at Albergue Praia do Forte Hostel gives you free entrance to both Projeto Tamar as well as Projeto Baleia Jubarte; The Humpback Whale Project.
30 years ago, a small humpback whale population was discovered off the coast of Bahia in North-East Brazil. This was exciting news, as the species was almost extinguished from Brazilian waters following 400 years of whaling. The same year, whaling was banned in Brazil, and Projeto Baleia Jubarte was created to promote research that could protect the huge mammals in the country. In Praia do Forte, there is even an Environmental Education Centre for tourists as well as local pupils, students and people to visit.
By working with both tourists and local communities, the project succeeds in raising awareness. According to the project’s own experience, awareness raising is a key to strengthen marine conservation. Thus, the Albergue Praia do Forte Hostel is also a crucial supporting partner, directing tourists from all over the world to learn about the whales, the conservation work being done and perhaps – if visiting between July and October – of whale watching.
And the great news is: the humpback whale population off the coast of North-East Brazil has increased with 30 percent since Projeto Baleia Jubarte came into place!
