When you have a hostel you often find yourself having lots of wall space. As a hostel it is important to be innovative and creative. How about letting others do the creative part for you? Inviting local artists to decorate the hostel is a great way to show your guests the local culture. The photography above is from Adrena Sport Hostel in Belo Horizonte, Brasil. The local artist Rogerio Fernandes has decorated the walls in the backyard of the hostel – an area that is perfect for small concerts and other events.
The photos below show local arts at Hostel Chapada in Lencoís (to the left) and Hostel Caminhos da Chapada in Palmeiras in Brasil.
Have an art exhibition at your hostel
Several hostels hold exhibitions with local artist at their hostel, which is a great way to involve the local community and at the same time decorate the hostel.
At Mango Tree Ipanema Hostel in Rio de Janeiro and Aju Hostel in Aracaju they give up their wall space for these artists to display their art and spread it to a wider audience. The pieces have a note next to it stating the name of the art, along with the suggested price tag. What better way to be screening the city for art than when you’re eating your breakfast?
Mango Tree also has the idea to switch out the art every three months. This way the hostel often get a “makeover”, while they are also supporting local artist getting their work out to the larger public.
