Yesterday, for the first time in Gjøvik, we organized a Bokmesse – an open book exchange fair! We invited readers from the city to unite and share their books, for free:
“Book lovers all over Gjøvik unite!
Who doesn’t love a good book? The drama, the mystery, the adventure, the romance… Finishing a book can be very satisfying but also sad, because that is THE END. But what if you could share that with other people? That way it wouldn’t have an end but a new beginning!
So, we are organizing a book exchange here in Hovdetun, where you can share your stories and get some new ones! The event will happen on the 28th of June, from 17:00p.m. until 18:30p.m. Bring those books you loved and would like to exchange with someone for another interesting book.”
As this was the first time we organized an event like this, we did not know how many people would show up. In the end, we had 18 fantastic readers, who decided to come and exchange their books at the hostel. Around 30 books were exchanged and 23 were donated to the hostel.
We talked to a few of the people that came and found out that the bokmesse has a lot of potential, especially if done in the right time of the year. Book fans will read books all year around, that is a fact, but during the summer people might be prone to go outdoors more and enjoy the sun. A good suggestion that we got was to organize one during autumn or winter, because of the cold weather, people tend to stay more at home and read more.
For those who missed out on the event or couldn’t make it, we have a small library here in Hovdetun, which anyone can come and exchange or even borrow a book. Hopefully this was the first of many other book exchange fairs to happen here at Hovdetun, and we certainly got some good ideas and tips for the next ones!
