Cooperate With a Waste Cooperative
Hostels such as Hostel 7 Goiania, Brazil and Praia do Forte Hostel, Brazil have engaged with local cooperatives to recycle their waste. In Praia do Forte we met with the founder of one of the cooperatives – Djalma. He told us that he gathered waste from local businesses to re-sell it to larger businesses. The money he received he invested in the education offer for the children in his local community. Finding these people in your city or town can make all the difference. Both to the environment and to your surroundings.
Handling waste is always a challenge. The world consumes more and produce more waste every year that passes. Different countries also have different engagement from the government when it comes to waste management. Several hostels in Brazil has shown an impressive engagement on this field. One solution your hostel can do to decrease your impact on the world, is cooperate with a local waste cooperative. In Brazil there are many waste pickers, these are mainly the ones who contribute to a large amount of the recycling happening in the country. However, the work conditions are not beneficial, and many look down on them. In order for them to have better work conditions many have started grouping together in waste cooperatives.
