Buy local and fair!
Buying local products is an effective way of reducing the CO2-emissions related to transportation of goods. Local and smaller retailers often produce their products organically, without pesticides and with a higher degree of animal welfare (if you have meat on your menu…) The quality of these products are often high and have more taste! You also contribute to the local economy, helping your community stay sustainable in the food and drink production. Hostel Caminhos de Chapada in Palmeiras buy all the products they need for their restaurant from the local market once a week, or from nearby farms in the area.
Not all foods and drinks can be produced everywhere in the world, coffee and tea for example. If you can not find the products you need in your region (or country), make sure to look for fair-trade certificates on these products. This can ensure that the local workforce is being paid properly and that environmental standards are being met in the production.
