Ferananda, one of the FK partcipants last year have written a letter of reflection from her year in Norway. Here you can read about how it is to return to your home country after a experience like this.
A letter from a brazilian to Hostelling International Norway
After one year working for Hostelling International in Norway, we finally came back to Brazil. It is a strange feeling, being back in the place that we used to call home but that does not feel that much like home anymore. Friends and family asking “How was it?” and the truth is that I do not even know how to answer the question. I am still processing what this experience meant to me. I usually tell them that Norway is the most different country from Brazil that I have even been, in all ways, for the good things and for the bad ones.
In between so much snow, low temperatures, matpakke and the fjords, we have experienced a whole different culture. We had challenges at work and in the social life. Sometimes we felt lonely, sometimes we felt so happy to be in such a beautiful country, sometimes we missed our beloved ones, sometimes we felt free for being independent and travelling to many places.
I guess the word that summarizes Norway for me is; learning. Learning more about myself, what makes me happy, what my limitations are and what I can improve in myself, both professionally and personally. I learned how the organization works and how the hostels are structured, how to approach sustainability in the hostel business, how to be more organized and create consistent projects. I learned so much that now I finally feel that I am ready to do a good job. But I guess that is how life works, so I hope I can take all of that to my next experiences.
Thank you Hostelling International! You offered me so much, from good work, to travels, meeting people and special moments! For that I will be forever grateful
